Love poems.

In the poem "Villanelle", I came to understand it is about love and how we can't contimplate what love really is. No matter how much love one may feel it is just an emotion that gives us a reason to celebrate. Yet not really knowing what lovers are really celebrating. It is complicated but this is the poem I understood the most out of the three. In "Love Calls Us to the Things of This World", the title and last sentence helped me kind of understand the meaning. Love helps us balance out our life. With all our daily tasks we do and experiences we encounter love is there to balance it out. In "Love Poem", it wasn't so clear to see but I think it is about his dear clumsy love that no matter what he would still do anything for her and love her. This love is what makes life worth waiting for. Love the person they are! Although it did kind of seem that he was making fun of her or complaining about her problems but I like the idea of him loving her no matter what!

Why do we write about love?
Literature is a way for us to dream, create and fantasize. For me reading stories or poems about love gives me a sense of creativity. As I read about love of course I fall in love with the story. Ever since I was  a little girl I was always told about the princess and her love story. My superiors always told me that I was a princess and that I would find my true prince one day! This for a young girl gave me hope for the future and self esteem. Love is something I love to read about! I like to write about my love to my sweetheart and I can only imagine others do too and that is why we have literature about love. Love is such a grand feeling beyond any feeling in the world and to experience it some may want to share it with the world or give others hope in finding a love like theirs. I am really excited for this week in class. Love is always fun to talk about for me. Although I would say that love should not only be written down but it should be voiced as well. Hearing the expressions of your sweethearts love for you is my favorite moments in all my life.

Why is Hamlet a tragedy?

This play was interesting. It was my first time listening to the story and to me the real tragedy was how Hamlet lost his reality. He wasn't himself once the ghost of his father told him the truth. Ophilia even noticed a difference in his attitude, personality, and stature. He began to think bad things of his mother and it seemed like he was alone and no one could be trusted. He lost all family ties through this saddening news of his uncle killing his father and then moving in on his mother. The uncle's son kind of gave a sense of superiority over Hamlet even though Hamlet is the rightful hier of the throne. It also seemed like the cousin and Ophilia were ment for each other in a sense of an arranged courtship. This play was hard to follow for me but this is what I understood.

What was this story about?

This story was very confusing and not one of my favorites. As we learn about Mr.Goliadkin throughout the story he is crazy. In real life it is hard to understand a crazy person yet alone understand one in a book. To me this story was about gossip, backstabbing, and knowledge. The gossip was apart of Mr.Goliadkin trying to fix things, he would ask about people and try to snoop in everyones business if it pertained to him or his "Double". The backstabbing plays out throughout the whole story. As Mr.Goliadkin befriends his new "Double" the very next day he feels betrayed and shoved out of his own life. This would be confusing to me if I was in that situation. Later during the story Mr.Goliadkin catches up with his "twin" and tries to set things right by telling him he is not his enemy. This was thrown out the window by his twin and to me in a sense Mr.Goliadkin is slowly finding out who he is and who others are and how it all plays out in the end. Going through your life not knowing what is going on of course will make you crazy. I feel for the guy, Mr.Goliadkin!

What are your intial thoughts of Mr. Goliadkin?

At the beginning of the story I thought he was a looked down upon co-worker of high people. He seemed mental in some ways like the way he talks and has problems talking to others. He is hard to understand and get to know. I kind of feel bad for Petrushka having to deal with him everyday. Towards the ending of todays readings I began to feel sympathy for the guy. He finds a double him, befriends him and gets stabbed in the back the next day at work. He already is a bottom of the food chain guy at work but with his double excelling at work makes him seem even lower than before in position. To me Mr. Goliadkin is a confused man that is trying to hard to live life. He is full of worries and anxiety. His desire to be accepted and play it cool is too strong for himself to actually pull off. He wants bigger things in life before he has worked on the little things. This mental man is getting his mind played with and hopefully he can figure it out and come out on top of this whole mess that he created with his double.

What is the connection between sleeping and dying?
This subject is a little iffy, if you know what I mean. Some come to think of death as a deep sleep awaiting the after life. Now I wonder how did this idea come about? Was it the disney story of 'Sleeping Beauty' or was it a way for the loved ones to let go? In 'Sleeping Beauty' her deep sleep is a current state of "death" if you may until she awaits her prince to share true love's first kiss. If you think about it this way it can be said as if Sleeping Beauty was awaiting her new life, previous to the one she was in, escaping her old reality. With a religous stand point the family is easier to cope with the lose of a loved one when they know of a later life and their loved one's body is in a 'deep sleep' til the end of days to later reunite and live for the eternities. One of the innocent connections is when describing a tradgic loss to a little child the adult says, "Mommy is sleeping". This helps the innocent child but what happens when they realize their definition of sleeping doesn't match the description of what mommy is really doing, "when is mommy going to wake up"? Sleeping is another way of telling that someone has died in a nice way that may be a lessor blow to the heart than hearing the word Death!

Why do authors write about killing?

Reading theses few stories I never bould understand how they would come up with such a story to write or even why they would write something so sad and depressing. But then of course they may not be sad and depressing to everyone. some people believe that your true colors show within your last few moments of life. I can see where that thought is coming from like if the victim is courageous and dies with a fight that can say a lot about a person but I still don't see why authors write about such things. Why not write about the people who show their true colors throughout their life and not just when death is looking them in the eyes. some stories like this makes me wonder if they are what influence the murders here today. I have never had the thought to kill so I don't necessarily understand where the murderer is coming from. Maybe they have a psychological issue and find some thrill about causing death for others. Honestly I did not like the stories we read and I am not excited to read more or talk about death this week. Even though it is something we all are going to face I prefer my death to be unexpected by old age and not a murder. I don't want to think of my death I am too young to die!

The Moon Is Down: Who won and who lost in the story?

I really like the ending of the story. The way the people never give up secretly and how the mayor puts it in Lancer's face that they lost no matter what happens to himself. My favorite part was the way he resites from Socrates and Lancer is there listening to his speech of honorable death. The conquered people definately won with the spirit of liberty and the boost of bravery from the mayor. I really liked how this story got you to think and imagine the scene yourself. I wonder with the great loss of the conquerers what they are going to do. Will they still try to fight after their epic fail or will they report to their leader of the failure in the little coal mine town? I am glad the townspeople stood up for their rights! It put a smile on my face as I read the last chapter. This gives me the courage to fight back if my town was ever invaded.

The Moon Is Down: How would I react to a town invasion?
Throughout this story I had many thoughts on what I would do but the most frequent came to mind was to stay silent until the right time came to beat the intruders at their own game. This was something I have thought much about especially thinking of our own history and all the people that fought for our liberty we enjoy today. The confusion among the intruders gave a great opportunity to attack all at once not just one man. I think I would fight back but ya know there is always a time to be quiet and wait for the best time to fight. If I so happen to be faced with death or obeying orders I would fight back and die for the liberty of our country. Saving another's life for the cost of my own sound heroic and maybe that is why I think I could do it. When the situation comes I plan to not give in but I have this small doubt of fear that I should stay quiet for the better cause. I guess to say that it depends on the situation!

Why do authors write about life struggles?

Looking back on life gives me a sense of identity. Through each struggle I push for what I need to learn. We each need to learn from the past, that is how we grow. Thinking of the short stories and poems each ending left me with a question. It was suspensful and left me awaiting for the next step the characters would take in life. Not only do we learn from our own struggles but from others' as well. Reading about some of these struggles gets my mind going on a solution which I can't help think it is helping me solve some of my own stuggles. Whether they are the same struggles or totally different the brain is working to solve to the best of its ability. One of my favorite things to do with a very good friend of mine is to talk about the struggles I go through. Talking to her gives me solutions that help tremedously through self thought or her advice. Maybe there are people out there like myself that like to talk about their trials to help them overcome them or maybe they like to keep them inside and figure it out on their own. I don't know but it sure does help me not only receive a solution but the stress of that struggle lessens a little and I feel a sense of peace for that brief moment.

Young Goodman Brown by Nethaniel Hawthorne (1804-1864)

This story was confusing for me at first but when I finished the story it all came together. At first when he left his new wife Faith I was wondering what he was going to do especially when it mentioned the devil and the evil thing he was going to do. My thoughts jumped from adultry to murder to theft. The way Goodman Brown changed throughout the story really made me think about how we react to and are vulnerable to the daily temptations encircling us. During my reading I tried applying it to my own life and the trials I have gone through. This really hit home and I made the connection of how we fall into snares all the time. The way Mr. Brown knowingly went into the forest of temptation scared me. When I think of a temptation or trail and I know that it is there I try to avoid it at all costs! I was once told to know your weaknesses and not to ever go there! It is called a temptation because the devil knows your weaknesses and he tries to tempt you to weaken you and make you his slave. With Faith in his mind he is able to overcome and return home to grow old with his wife and pass with happiness. I truly know this from experience. As I struggle through my temptations what helps me through each day are my loved ones. They make my weaknesses strong!  Family and friends are angels sent from above to help you become your best.
